Why implant quotes differ so much

City, specialist or general dentist, abutment and crown choices and what's bundled: a 2025 survey of 278 offices shows how far implant prices spread.

Mark your teeth once and this phone keeps the chart; once installed it opens with no signal.

It's common to get two implant quotes that are $2,000 apart for what sounds like the same tooth. Published surveys explain a good part of that gap.

One survey, six cities

In September 2025, researchers phoned dental offices in six metro areas with the same script and asked for the price of a complete single-tooth implant: implant, abutment and crown. Dental Economics published the results in February 2026 (read the article).

Metro area Median, complete implant tooth
Minneapolis $5,505
Chicago $4,500
San Francisco $4,000
Philadelphia $3,900
Denver $3,833
Houston $3,665
All six (278 offices; 115 of them in Houston) $4,000

The table shows two patterns. First, San Francisco sits in the middle of the six, not at the top. Second, the gap between the dearest and cheapest city medians is $1,840, almost half the overall median.

Who did it. The authors work at an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Houston, and the headline finding favors specialists. The article reports its own limits too: some offices gave incomplete prices and some sub-samples were small. We use its figures because the method and date are published, and say so here.

Specialist or general dentist

The same survey found a median of $3,400 when a specialist (an oral surgeon or periodontist) placed the implant and $4,800 with a general dentist, a gap of about 29%. The survey doesn't settle why. Whoever you see, ask whether the quoted figure covers all three parts and who makes the crown.

State and region

The 2024 Synchrony study, which CareCredit publishes by state, puts the average single implant at $1,790 in Alabama and $3,565 in Hawaii, with a national average of $2,143 (CareCredit, Feb. 20, 2026). Our state map shows all 51.

What's in the price

Choice Effect on the quote
Stock or custom abutment Custom costs more
Crown material Porcelain averaged $1,399, porcelain-fused-to-metal $1,114, metal $1,211 (Synchrony 2024)
Scan included or extra Cone-beam CT averaged $466
Extraction and graft bundled Can add $700 to $3,000+
Sedation Billed separately; ask
Temporary tooth Often extra for front teeth

Crown and scan figures: CareCredit procedure costs, checked 30 Oct 2026. The $700 low end is a simple extraction ($177) plus a socket graft ($558) at roughly national prices; with a surgical extraction ($363) it is about $920; the high end adds a sinus lift or your own bone.

Worked example: two quotes in Illinois

Illinois has an index of 1.03, so the scaled overall median for a complete implant tooth is about $4,120, and the scaled Minneapolis median, the dearest city in the survey, about $5,670.

  • Quote 1, $3,600: implant by an oral surgeon, crown by your own dentist quoted at $1,300 separately. True total $4,900.
  • Quote 2, $4,700: one practice, everything included, plus the scan.

Quote 1 looked $1,100 cheaper but is $200 dearer once the crown is added. Both sit between the specialist median and the dearest-city median once those are scaled to Illinois.

What a fair comparison needs

  1. The same items in both quotes, written down.
  2. The same materials, or an explanation of why they differ.
  3. What happens if a graft turns out to be needed during surgery.
  4. If the implant fails, who pays for the redo: is there any re-treatment policy?

The ADA reminds patients that they should expect a comprehensive exam and a discussion of options before treatment is recommended, and that a second opinion is always open to them (ADA statement, Nov. 1, 2024). Put both quotes through the estimator in Advanced mode to see where each sits.
